Hours: Evening, 10 hours per week for 12 weeks (plus 3 hoursper week paid planning)
Arlington Mill Community Center: Monday-Thursday, 6:30-8:45 pm
Syphax Education Center: Monday-Thursday evening, 6:45-9:00 pm
For 49 years, our mission at REEP has been to provide for the education andemployment related needs of adults learning English in Arlington County as wellas others in need of adult basic education skills. The REEP program andcurriculum prepare adult students with the language, life, and digital literacyskills necessary to flourish as Northern Virginia residents and employees. REEPlearners come from countries around the world, and they work across ourcommunity in a myriad of jobs.
Instructors are expected to carry out the program’s mission by course planning,preparing daily lesson plans, and curating/designing materials. Lesson planswill meet the needs of all learners and directly align with the approach andobjectives of the REEP Curriculum. The role of the instructor requires the useof specific digital platforms to complete administrative tasks that falloutside teaching hours.
Job Responsibilities
Instructional
Following the REEP Curriculum, English Language Proficiency Standards and REEPDigital Literacy Skill Set:
- conduct needs assessments to determine learner needs and create a course plan
- assess student levels using REEP Level Descriptors
- establish classroom rules for behavior and enforce school division policiesand procedures
- use instructional design to prepare daily lesson plans that:
o establish clear language and digital resilience objectives
o are level-appropriate and learner focused
o provide whole class, small group, partner, and individual instruction
o lead to high-quality and substantive group participation with real lifeapplication
- integrate classroom instructional technology, including interactive projectorand mobile computer lab
- evaluate students’ progress and the course plan’s effectiveness throughregular formative and summative assessments
- make and communicate informed promotion and retention decisions at the end ofeach cycle
Administrative
- Meet with students individually at mid-cycle to communicate progress
- Meet with students individually at the end of each cycle to communicatepromotion/retention decisions
- Attend required beginning of cycle, mid-cycle and end of cycle teachermeetings
- Utilize required school technology including Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word,Excel and PowerPoint, the Google Workspace, interactive boards, and otherapplications
- Register, assess, and assist in placement of learners into appropriate classesaccording to REEP procedures
Professional Development
- Annually, in coordination with site coordinator, identify and implementinstructional goals
- Participate in required instructional staff development opportunities
- Collaborate with REEP coordinators, instructors, lab assistants, and officestaff to meet program goals
Requirements for Applicants
- Bachelor’sdegree (education, linguistics, or a related field)
- Experienceteaching ESL to adult immigrants and refugees at a variety of levels
- Experience andopenness to integrating digital literacy and technology into instruction
- Openness andcommitment to work within the program’s approach to instruction
- Ability andcommitment to arrive each day prepared for class and ready to start on time
- Ability andcommitment to complete a full cycle with minimal disruption to student learning
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degreein TESL or related field
- TEFL/TESOLcertificate or work toward certification
- Experiencedelivering virtual instruction
Employment Conditions and Benefits:
- All new to REEPintensive instructors start at $26.39, hourly
