Cambridge Blended CELTA Course Online (14 - 17 Weeks)

Online TEFLIn response to an increasing need for more flexible course delivery, Cambridge University have created the CELTA online as a way for candidates to get the benefits of both online learning and face to face practice. Because the syllabus and the outcomes are the same as the purely face to face CELTA course, the certificate you receive is the same standard certificate from University of Cambridge CELTA as the other course types.

The CELTA online is a combination of online content, delivered by an approved online CELTA tutor, and the same lesson preparation and teaching practice component as the regular face-to-face.

Teaching House is currently offering the CELTA online in three different formats:

  1. 15 weeks in total, including 2 weeks intensive face-to-face towards the end of the course (USA only)
  2. 17 weeks in total, including 2 weeks intensive face-to-face towards the end of the course, with a two week study break (USA only)
  3. 14 weeks in total including 14 Saturdays of face-to-face (London and Melbourne only)

Because the CELTA online contains the same practical teaching component as the face to face course it is not any less intensive and challenging than a regular face-to-face course, and the same preparation and readiness required are the same.

What are the components of the course?

Online component: There are 13 weeks of online instruction in total. Lead by specialist online CELTA tutors, this online instruction is highly interactive and includes videos to watch as well as tasks to complete – both on your own and in pairs and groups. In addition, there are 7 live (synchronous) sessions where the group ‘meets’ online to provide additional support for the online content. These sessions are recorded so you can go back to them as required. The assessment on the online portion of the course is continuous and measured in participation in forums, completion of the weekly tasks and completion of assignments.

You should expect to work 8-10 hours a week during “online” weeks.

Face-to-face component (2 weeks): These are 11 contact days with a two day break in-between. In this time you will complete written assignments and live teaching practice with real students. This is a highly intensive two week session, and you will be observed and assessed teaching almost every day. It is important that you are able to be both mentally and logistically well prepared for the face-to-face component. The lessons delivered and the assignments completed during the face to face component form the bulk of the formal assessment on the course.

Face-to-face component (14 Saturdays): This format is similar to our part-time face to face option, however instead of meeting 2 evenings per week for teaching practice, the teaching practice takes place over 14 Saturdays.

What do I need to do the CELTA Online Course?

You will need access to a laptop or desktop computer to take the course, because the course was developed using Flash it will not work on iPads or Mobile Devices. You will need a reliable internet connection, with broadband speed connection to be able to stream the videos and take part in the "live" sessions. Minimum computer specifications include a processing speed of at least 1GHz, an up-to-date operating system, and a mininum of 1 GB RAM. You'll also need the latest Firefox or Safari browser. You'll need Microsoft Word or Open Office and the latest versions of the plug-ins Adobe Flash, Reader and Java.

What does the CELTA Online Cost?

The Teaching House CELTA online course is $2945 for courses that include the face-to-face component in the USA. This additional cost is due to extended tutor time (your online tutor will be available outside of regular working hours) and additional licensing costs for the online content.

Why choose the CELTA online?

While it is difficult to match the effectiveness of a 100% face-to-face CELTA course, the CELTA Online tends to suit people that need more flexibility and time to work on the course materials. In addition the CELTA online including the 2 week face-to-face option appeals to those who have reduced vacation time, or who are looking to save money on room and board while they are doing the CELTA. Because the certificate from Cambridge is exactly the same, you are not at a disadvantage in the recruitment pool once you are qualified.

Where is the face-to-face component?

Currently Boston, Chicago, Washington D.C., London and Melbourne with more cities being added as the popularity of this option grows.
