ESL Lesson Download: April Fool’s Day

By | On 25 Mar, 2014

Hey TEFL Teachers!

April 1st is fast approaching and you know what that means? April Fools!

Worried about that prank your students are planning to hit you with this year? Don’t sweat it! Because one of our amazing (and devious) CELTA Teacher Trainers, Fiona Mulcahy, has cooked up this clever prank for you to play on your students first. Ha! It’s an educational prank, of course, so don’t worry about getting in trouble.

Here’s how it goes:

1) Click below to download your Teacher’s Notes and Lesson Materials:

2) Load this You Tube video about a special breed of flying penguins (Spoiler alert: It’s an elaborate and fake creation by the BBC, but sshhhh! Don’t tell your students!):

3) Then load THIS You Tube video explaining the truth behind the BBC video (Just be careful not to show this to your students first or it will spoil the surprise!):

4) Sit back and watch your students practice their listening and speaking skills while getting punk’d by their teacher. Ha! Who’s the clever one now? (You are.)

Happy April Fool’s Day! We hope it’s a fun one (and that your students don’t retaliate too badly)!

If you and your students enjoyed this lesson, please leave a comment to let us know how it went!

Thank you for the idea and materials. I did this lesson today with an upper intermediate/advanced speaking and listening class, and it worked out great. One fell for it, one was confused, and one knew it was a hoax, but let me go on until the second video revealed the truth. They enjoyed it, and so did I, but it was hard to keep a straight face :-). Thanks again!
