Thanks for this post! I also got into ESL teaching by volunteering in a conversational program – and my love for teaching grew from there! Great writing and I look forward to reading more. 🙂

Thanks Jessica for reading! Students love conversation classes 🙂 And as a teacher, you never know what will come up in those sessions!

Thanks for the post! I’m also an ESL teacher in Brazil and I have recently done the CELTA course at IH Boston! =)

I just loved your line “Then, a rough-and-tumble Brazilian boy waltzed into my life and changed my path”……. the same thing happened to me when I was au pairing in the USA some years ago.
Now here I am, 11 years later – and that “Brazilian boy” became my husband and the father of my two children. We live in Curitiba, Parana and I teach English. It’s been a bumpy road, adjusting to life here, but we are settling in eventually. I’m still learning how to be a teacher, had to go and relearn all the grammar that I take for granted, maybe one day I’ll be really good! -
Hi Jessie! Thanks for your comments. I hear Curitiba is a lovely city, but I haven’t made it there (yet.) Yes, adjusting to life anywhere, I think, is always a challenge. It always the little things that throw me for a loop 🙂 And when you teach English, your opportunities to speak the native language can be less than if you had a job in another industry. I actually didn’t start taking Portuguese classes until I was living in Brazil for 2 years! Crazy, I know. As a teacher, you would have thought I would have taken classes sooner… but silly me, I though I could learn “organically.” If you enjoy teaching, you are already a good teacher… this is half the battle I think! If you ever find yourself near Uberaba, give a shout. Tchau!
