Hi Mel – thanks for taking the time to read…and especially comment on the post – appreciate that.

Wonderful stuff – I can picture it clearly!

Hi Tim
Thanks a lot for taking the time to leave a comment!

A classic story. My favourite line “the ambitiously named…” had me chuckling for sure. My own experience was not dissimilar, though at my school it was the ‘Cane’ not the belt.
-
Hi Ricky – thanks a lot for the comment. We had the cane too…but that was in primary school!
-
The Cane at Primary School? How appropriate!…and what did they use at College – The Electric Chair?…Firing Squad? Reminds me of the great Monty Python skit “In’t middle o’ Road” (can’t remember the real name, but you’ll know it if you love the Python boys)
-
Ha ha haha….I know the sketch, it’s the Four Yorkshiremen

What a finding! Really funny and well written.

Thanks for the reply MC – some more posts coming soon.

This is a brilliant piece John and brings back so many memories of my time teaching English in summer schools. If you don’t end up at the UN, it’s their loss!
That Monty Python sketch is hysterical too. I vaguely remembered the shoe box in the middle of the road but nothing of the rest. I’m wondering if I can work it into a lesson 🙂
I’m looking forward to reading more of your posts!

NOh so familiar, especially as most of us started out without even a proper qualification. remember being asked by some German “so what conditional are you teaching today, the 1st,2nd or 3rd?” And there was me thinking what the hell is a conditional??l. love the picture of Brighton Pier, home for me. Good lad, you’ve made it, with or without the belting!

Hi Sheila…thanks a lot for taking the time to leave a comment! It’s funny the things that you remember from when you first start out in the classroom.
-
I am looking forward to reading your forthcoming book. If you don’t already have a deal, perhaps you should talk to some publishers. I’d certainly buy a copy. Loved your writing.
-
Hi there Frankie
Thanks a lot for your kind words and I’m really touched you took the time to leave such positive feedback.
What I write about here has a lot of resonance for teachers as we’ve all been in these situations. Not so sure about a book, though if I ever do write one, I’ll send you a copy for free!

Hi John, I can picture the scene perfectly. Takes me back! Hope you are still having fun with life

Hi Inez
Thanks a lot for taking the time to leave a comment – and yes…I’m still having fun with life – which is a bit surreal at times!
