Can I Teach English in NYC?

Does the CELTA qualify me to teach in NY?

Yes. To teach English in New York (for example, at a private language school), the CELTA would either be a requisite or a big advantage (depending on the school - the better schools require it). Community colleges and organizations working with immigrant groups also employ CELTA graduates for their ESL courses. In total, there are roughly 300 institutes in New York that employ CELTA-qualified teachers.

The Cambridge CELTA will not qualify you to teach in a public primary or secondary school as you need to get a state license to work in public schools. However, having a CELTA looks good on an application for any teaching program and many teachers who take the CELTA course go on to teach in the public school system.
