DELTA Module 1: On-Site Course

For candidates living in New York City or the Tri-State region, Teaching House runs an on-site DELTA Module One preparation course. This course runs during the spring and autumn and leads up to the June or December exam, preparing candidates to take the DELTA Module One exam on either date.

Spring Course
The course is ten weeks long and is held every Wednesday at Teaching House New York (St. John’s University). The seminars run from 5:00-8:00pm. In addition, participants need to do 5-6 hours a week of work outside of class.

Autumn Course
The course is two weeks long and meets every day (Monday-Friday) for 3-4 hours. The sessions are run in the afternoons starting at 1:45pm. In addition, participants need to do 5-6 hours of work each weekday outside of class.

Each course has a maximum of 12 trainees. As the CELTA is a prerequisite for our DELTA program, course dynamics are built on a common understanding of key concepts provided during the CELTA.

The course requires reading of key texts in preparation and follow-on from sessions. In class, there are a lot of interaction, group collaborative activities, individual work with test taking (from former DELTA Module One tests) and presentations.

• Brief background to the history of ESL methodology
  
• How languages are learned
  
• Basic second language acquisition theory
  
• Course book and reference book materials analysis
  
• Learner errors and L1 interference

The course covers – exam preparation:

• Breakdown of tasks on the two papers
  
• Test preparation on individual test items
  
• Exam taking strategies
  
• Two full mock tests
