Delta Module Three

Extending Practice and English Language Teaching Specialism

The third module allows you to select a specialization of interest to you and develop a curriculum of study for a specific group of students. It can cover, among other areas, teaching younger learners, one-to-one, business English or English for Academic Purposes (See FAQs for a full list of study area). It is assessed through a written assignment which focuses on syllabus design, testing and evaluation.

The Teaching House Delta Module Three program starts with a two-day NYC seminar at our campus at St. John’s University. This seminar covers the course requirements, possible areas of specialization, assistance with research ideas and possible online and library resources.

After this there is a 3-month period where candidates research for their assignment and write it up. During this period, your tutor provides support through six 30 minute in-person or by phone consultations. Tutors will also read over work done and provide feedback to what needs to be done.

The aims of Module Three are to: 1. Enable candidates to develop their knowledge in relation to specialist areas within English language teaching 2. Develop candidates’ knowledge of the principles of curriculum design and assessment in an English language teaching context, and to be able to apply it to a specific group of learners 3. Enable candidates to synthesize all of their learning into a project which can be coherently presented to a third party.

For the module, each candidate selects their chosen specialty and a respective group of students (or one-to-one student) and designs a needs analysis to evaluate the groups’ needs. This includes adapting or designing a diagnostic test to find out individual and group language skills. With analysis, candidates design a syllabus for the course to fit student needs and a form of assessment to monitor students progress through the program.
