General FAQs about the Delta
How is the Delta different from the CELTA?
The CELTA is a practical teacher training program designed for teachers with little or no formal in-class training. Candidates on the CELTA may or may not have had previous teaching experience. The Delta is an advanced in-service training course with a greater emphasis on theory than the practical side of teaching (though it still has a large practical component).
Why can’t I take the Delta if I haven’t completed the CELTA?
The Delta builds on the practical foundation that is provided on the CELTA course. Without the CELTA (and some teaching experience), candidates wouldn’t have the background knowledge, understanding of teaching techniques or evaluative tools to start the course.
In addition, some schools require teachers to have both the CELTA and Delta. Without the CELTA, schools may question whether a teacher has basic teaching techniques.
Why can’t I apply if I have completed a different training course that isn’t the CELTA?
The Teaching House Delta program is not an initial teaching training course, and, as such, relies on candidates bringing certain skills and understanding to the program. There is not time on the course to re-teach in full all aspects that are covered on the CELTA course. Because the Delta builds on the foundation that the CELTA provides, it is an essential pre-requisite for taking the course. We cannot guarantee that other programs provide that foundation.
Must I have taken my CELTA at Teaching House?
No. A CELTA from any accredited University of Cambridge ESOL center is suitable.
Is the DELTA only for teaching General English to Adults?
No. The course used to be specifically for Teaching English to Adults, but can now incorporate teaching English to other groups, including Younger Learners, Business English and Academic English.
Note that the Teaching Practice on the course during Module Two is based around Teaching English to Adults.
Will having completed the Delta have any credit transfer to an MA course?
Maybe. Many universities which run MA (or M.Ed.) courses in TESOL or Applied Linguistics accept the Delta as equivalent to between ¼ and 1/3 of the total course modules. Click here for a list of centers which have given credit hours
If I don’t complete any module that I have started, can I get a refund?
Unfortunately, because the number of places on each course is limited and trainers on a course need to be paid, Teaching House cannot provide a refund or course change under any circumstances.
