Assessment of the Delta

Module One

Assessment on Delta Module One is an examination. The exam is 9 questions on 2 exam papers and candidates have up to 90 minutes to complete each exam paper. The exam (both papers) can be taken on the first Wednesday of June or December.

Candidates are presented with English language teaching material and authentic texts, and must complete the two papers writing both short and long-answer essays. Each task on the papers is marked in accordance with task-specific mark schemes, and there are a total of 200 marks available for Delta Module One. Results for this module are awarded as Pass with Distinction, Pass with Merit, Pass, and Fail, based on the number of marks achieved.

Module Two

Candidates are assessed in Module Two based on a portfolio of coursework, including observed lessons, background written assignments, and an externally-assessed lesson observed by a senior Delta tutor appointed by the University of Cambridge.

The Teaching Practice Portfolio includes:

  • Four assignments (two language systems and two skills) that include an assessed lesson and a written component. Each assignment is 2,000-2,500 words and one of these lessons is externally assessed.
  • One Professional Development assignment that incorporates identifying your developmental needs as a teacher and focusing on these during the course as well as in an experimental teaching practice component and lesson where you follow a methodology you’ve not previously worked with.

Results for each component are marked as Pass with Distinction, Pass with Merit, Pass, or Fail.

Module Three

Delta Module Three is assessed through a written assignment of 4,000-4,500 words. The assignment has no set time limit, but must be submitted through an approved Cambridge ESOL Examination center (Teaching House New York) by the set submission date in June or December.
